Pedestrian access through a vehicular gate route should always be avoided and actively discouraged. Asking pedestrians to walk in the roadway is poor practice and may put lives at unnecessary risk. A separate pedestrian gate or path is always recommended where possible.

Choosing the Most Suitable Gate Type for the Application

Sliding

Sliding gates are very popular for a commercial environment as they are very secure and extremely reliable. If space is an issue or the roadway behind the gates is on a steep incline, an electric sliding gate is the best option. The gate runs on a base rail which must be level across the opening. If the opening is not level, a cantilever sliding gate, which does not require a gate track, can be installed.

Cantilever

A cantilever sliding gate is free to slide regardless of terrain. The cantilever design means that the gate is supported from one end as it opens and closes, so there is no need for a track to be fitted across the entrance. With no track required across the gate opening, a single leaf cantilever gate can span widths of up to 10m and can be installed on uneven ground, over block-paving, grass, gravel or even water. A cantilever sliding gate can be advantageous where the entrance slopes, busy or heavy traffic entrances or where minimal disturbance to the road surface is requested.

Swing

The swing driveway gates are generally the most popular and classic type of gate. Aesthetically the swing gates are very pleasing and largely used for properties with a level ground area. Swing gates also work when there is enough room between the entrance and the property to accommodate the fully-open gate leaf(s).
